Social media today is greatly a part of today’s society, and everyone, all ages has some part in social media. Social media can include television such as MTV, CNN, and other well known televising companies. It can also include social networks, such as twitter, myspace, and the more popular, facebook network. It’s inevitable that the majority of people in today’s society are going to be involved in some part of social media, especially children. But the real question is how can social media in general effect the minds of children today?















Today, America is number one in the use of Social networking sites such as Facebook, twitter, and Myspace. Statistics show that college kids 18-24 years of age made up the fast growing segment of Facebook users in 2010 (Hanson, 2011). Social media is growing in today’s culture, especially in the minds of society’s youth. “Social media sites are mostly good. They're where kids socialize and where they connect together today," said report author Dr. Gwenn O'Keeffe, CEO and editor-in-chief of Pediatrics Now. "Kids' social spaces are shrinking. They don't have the places or the time to hang out like their parents did. Social media allows them to have time to reconnect. But, it has to be done in a way that's not all-encompassing," O'Keeffe said. (Gordon, 2011) Overall, social media contributes negative effects on children.
Defined, “Social media are the online technologies and practices that people use to share content, opinions, insights, experiences, perspectives, and media themselves. They are media for social interaction. You can tell social software because it is no fun to use by yourself. An account with no friends connected has no value” (Cohen, 2011).
