{text:bookmark-start} Social Network Services: The World on a PC In the year 2002,the online universe changed forever when a few employees from an internet advertisement company joined Friendster, a proto-type online social network service. The employees used this small social network service to keep in touch with each other online. The benefits of this private social network service left a positive impact in the lives of those employees. In fact, the employees enjoyed the program enough to decide to create their own network and share it with the public. In August of 2003,the employees launched the social network service MySpace. Within six months of the MySpace launch, the service reported over 20 million members. Soon after, other network services were birthed online and the age of social network services began. The revolutionary benefits provided by social network services, such as MySpace, have impacted 21st century generations similar to the way the introduction of the telephone impacted generations of the 19th century. New business opportunities are an important and unexpected benefit of social network services. In 2008, social networks were reported to have created revenue upwardof $500 million dollars. Established corporations as well as start upcompanies have begun to shift their methods of advertising to focus on users of social network services. A CEO of a prominent marketing agency recently stated that online social network advertising is the new face of marketing. Recently, there has been a demand for new technology that will even better target the users of social network services. It is difficult to watch TV, listen to the radio, or read a newspaper without some sort of mention of social networks and the new business opportunities being offered.
