Defeating Childhood Obesity
After reviewing the article, Tina Schwager explains how back in the “old” days children got their physical exercise by just playing outside with other kids. She also explains how now in today’s society that child play with others through a virtual world, such as playing video games mainly. She also believes that these children are eating unhealthy due to this virtual world because they just sit at home and aren’t outside. She breaks down several reason people believe children are obese. One reason people believe they are obese is because it is hereditary. Tina disagrees with that because she explain how human genetic of obesity population hasn’t changed in the last three decades but obesity has tripled. She blames media for most of the population obesity, due to computers, cell phones, video games and so forth. The Department of Health and Human Services did surveys back in 2007, found that 60 % of highschool kids used these media. So as mention getting outside and playing has been replaced by technology interaction. Children physical activity has been limited unless they are involved with a sport league or can afford to work with pro trainers. She also mentions how today’s society isn’t exactly safe foe children to play outside which might be a big reason for the technology. In 2007, 65% of high school students didn’t meet the recommendation of physical activities and 70% didn’t attend PE classes.
