JJT2 Social Responsibility

Florida Community College started in the 1960’s. At the time it was one building for classes, and several portables for the administrative offices. Over the next three decades the college grew to 5 campuses, two with 8-12 buildings, and three campuses with a large building with 100’s of classrooms and administrative offices.
As a learning institute, FCC knows that they need to be leaders in social responsibility. Lawrence and Weber states that “Corporate social responsibility is the idea that businesses interact with the organization’s stakeholders for social good while they pursue economic goals”. A college like FCC needs to be consentience of their role in the community and be a guiding force for students to be aware of their place in society and how they can be positive contributors.
A community college is a perfect representation for the Triple Bottom Line (TBL). As an institution of higher learning, the College and its leaders need to be thinking about the “people, planet and profit” (Lawrence and Weber, 2013)
A1. Environmental considerations and recommendations (planet)
Consideration One: FCC allows printers to be in every faculty and administrative office. It would be beneficial for the college to have a toner recycle plan in place. Before an employee receives a replacement toner, the old toner needs to be packaged up and ready to send back for recycling.
Consideration Two: Sustainable landscaping for the five campuses poses a better environment and would make a positive learning opportunity for the community. The college can plant native plants around their campuses which also consists of some walking paths. Also the college needs to have a safe pesticide program in play.
Consideration Three: The College can practice “clean cleaning”. The custodian staff needs to work with vendors in ordering environmentally safe cleaning products when possible.
