Socialization plays an important role in the life of every child from birth till they are old. From the passage by Patrick Welsh, I totally agree with the author because when you give a child fish you must teach him how to fish to make them strong because the rate of teen pregnancy has greatly increased.
From my understanding of the passage, girls at the Alexandria’s T.C Williams High school get pregnant out of their free will. Agents of social change like technology, mass media and peer groups contribute to the reason why most of the girls get pregnant; they find it difficult to explain what they really feel to their parents or to the teachers and school administration. They talk more with their peers who might give them wrong advice as solution. Some teens are also overwhelmed when they see others pregnant. This can be seen in T C High School when young girls bring pictures of their sonogram to class, they talk about their baby shower and how cute they look in their pregnancy.
Again, teachers are not helping in that, most of them are afraid to talk about the issue of teen pregnancy because they don’t want to hurt those who are mothers or pregnant. Sociologist studies this king of problems in order to come out with solution to solve these things. Teacher has to be realistic with them so that they know the kind of life that awaits them when they put to birth.
In the cultural way, some of these of these teens will say it is a rite of passage. Rite of passage means taking on a bigger responsibility resulting in a change of priorities. But I bet you these teens are not ready to take up the challenges involve, so teens pregnancy should not be link to culture.
The author is right when he says the health department provides basically everything to these young mothers like insurance, food (WIC), rides for their doctor’s appointment and even a day care center for them to keep their children. All these are dong for these young girls to help them through school....
