Shan Anand Professor Limbach English 110 12 December 2008 Feminism Feminism is the theory of political, economic and social equality of the sexes according to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary. Feminism is present all around the world. American feminism is divided into three separate waves. The first wave started in the late 19th to the early 20th century with the women’s suffrage movement. The second wave of feminism dealt with the inequality of laws and cultural inequality of women. The third wave is a continuation of the other two waves and deals with the failures of the second phase. Today, many works of literature portray the ideas of feminism. Two specific novels that portray feministic theory are Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies and Pretties. Uglies is a science fiction novel, which is set in a dystopian world where everyone turns pretty at the age of sixteen. The protagonist, Tally Youngblood, is a young girl who rebels against this society after learning the downsides of becoming pretty. Pretties is the second novel in the series. It begins with Tally, who has already had the operation and turned pretty, trying to join a group called the crims. Throughout the novel Tally makes many significant decisions that are signs of feminism. Uglies and Pretties both qualify as feminist text because they show females using male characteristics, such as being adventurous and being leaders of their groups. Adventurous attitude is traditionally a male characteristic. In American history most of the adventurous individuals were in fact men. One prominent example of an adventurous man is Neil Armstrong. Armstrong was born on August 5th, 1930. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War until 1952. He then became a test pilot for NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics). Soon after on July 20, 1969, Armstrong became the first person to ever set foot on the moon showing the traditional adventurous characteristic of men. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is...
