In the field of Human Services, interviewing skills are essential. Interviewing is a skill that is practiced daily for some professionals, so it is imperative to know the three stages of interviewing and what they entail. By gaining a basic understanding of the structure of an interview and how the process works, the relationship between worker and client becomes much more effective and efficient, which helps both parties immeasurably. Because the skills used in interviewing are not the same as those used in typical conversations, it is important to identify and practice each skill as often as possible (Miller, 2012).
During the first stage of interviewing, Exploration, specific elements should be present for the process to be most effective. Attending Behavior, Effective Questioning, Reflecting Content, Reflecting Feeling, and Integrating Exploration Skills all build upon one another to strengthen the working relationship between client and worker. In addition, by using these skills, the Interviewer is able to get a general picture of why the client seeks their assistance and who the individual is past basic demographics. It is by using the different elements of exploration that the interviewer is able to build a solid rapport with the client and get a basic understanding of who they are, which will aid the interviewer in deciding how best to interact with the client, as well as give them a good idea of what things will need to be asked during clarification.
The second stage of interviewing, Clarification, allows the interviewer the opportunity to get a better idea of the issues that the client has, in addition to beginning to create general goals for the client.
