Are uniforms infringing on our right to the first amendment? Over the past decade, the demand for mandatory uniforms in the public school system has risen. This issue has been ongoing battle for students, parents and school officials. But now is as controversial as ever since it was introduced publicly by President Bill Clinton in his inaugural speech in 1996. So if the issue made it all the way to his speech, there must have been a problem that needed to be addressed. Who’s to say whether it’s right or wrong? Though both sides of the issue indeed have logical and sound points to their argument, making uniforms mandatory would help students more than they can see. The pro’s to this issue can go on and on but the ones that matter the most include removing distractions and peer pressure, definitely decreasing violence and theft, teaching students discipline, encouraging students to be a part of a community instead of cliques, and helping school administrators recognize trespassers. Instilling mandatory uniforms in the public school system is the road public school administrators should go to give back to their students.

It has come to a point that fashion statements and designer clothes receive more attention than knowledge and education. It’s agreeable that making uniforms mandatory would limit one’s personal expression and individuality but fashion just creates too many problems that jeopardize their education. Not being up to date with the latest fashions causes teasing and peer pressure.
