Space today is still vast, unknown and unexplored. Since the 1500’s when Galileo first looked up and started to technologically view the sky, people have flown and walked in the emptiness that is space. We have only gotten to know a small fraction of the space around our planet. The rest is unknown. Unknown is one of the most fascinating feelings the human body can experience. It can bring on fear, panic, self control, inner thought and many other random emotions. Gene Roddenberry took that feeling of the unknown and decided to make space, known. From his imagination he created the epic television show Star Trek. Starting in 1966, Star Trek now has five television series and ten full length movies. In the Star Trek 25th Anniversary Special, William Shatner explained this about Gene Roddenberry’s vision for the original serious. “He wanted to explore the human condition” and “show an optimistic view of the future” (“Star Trek 25th Anniversary Special”) During the time period when Star Trek was created the technology had only begun to enable the capabilities of space travel. Neil Armstrong had landed on the moon just a year before and the first man made satellite was sent in to orbit a year later. Since 1966 there have been many technological advances that have let humans explore space to new depths. From the hundreds of thousands of satellites that make the billions of cell phones work to the recent robot based Mars expeditions. Gene Roddenberry did not realize at the time that his concept was going have a worldwide following for years to come. He also didn’t realize that the show and movies were going to fulfill the functions of myth that were created by Joseph Campbell. A man who’s teachings, books and interviews explore numerous aspects of myths. Star Trek embodies the sociological, cosmological and mystical functions of myth that Joseph Campbell has formed.
