Starbucks Coffee Kimberly Ward PSY 320 University of Phoenix Robert Strausser October 28, 2008 Workplace Rewards Assessment The most popular coffee house in the country is Starbucks. Starbucks was founded in Seattle’s Pike Place Markets in 1971. Starbucks purchases and roasts high quality whole bean coffees, as well as, Italian style espresso beverages. Starbucks sells them in its company operated retail stores. They also sell their products through specialty sale groups and supermarkets. The company’s primary goal is to establish Starbucks as the number one brand in the world (B. Kembell, Hawks, S. Kembell, Perry, & Olsen, 2002). In order to achieve this goal, Starbucks has set some remarkable standards for the company. These standards were as follows: Provide a great working environment and treat employees with respect and dignity; embrace diversity as an essential component in the way they do business; apply the highest standard of excellence in the purchasing, roasting, and fresh deliver of coffee; develop enthusiastically satisfied customers; contribute positively to communities and environment;recognize that profitability is essential to future success. These guiding principles (another name for Starbucks’ standards) helped establish Starbucks as the premier seller of the finest coffee in the world. These principles are the fundamentals of the company; Starbucks has included them as part of the company’s mission statement. Employees use these principles as a guide in achieving the company’s main objectives, decision making, and future organizational ventures (Kembell et al., 2002). Starbucks’ goals are not all geared toward dominating the market; some are set to provide employee satisfaction. Starbucks believes, if employees are treated well, customer satisfaction will follow.
