Stay at Home Dads: The Revolution
Remember back when? Mom, dad, sister, brother, fido, was the norm for the family living next door. Back when dad rose early for work in the morning, and came home to dinner on the table and hot apple pie cooling on the window sill. Back when mom stayed home and cleaned all day so dad could come home to an immaculate house to rest his tired feet. Well, these days, not everything is so “Leave it to Beaver”. Traditionally, men are supposed to support their family financially, while the women raise the children and take care of the household. Numerous households still hold these same values. But a growing population of men and women alike are branching out into new non traditional roles. Today, an increasing number of dads are taking on this challenge, raising the kids and maintaining the household, while the mothers head for work in the morning, briefcase in hand. Depending on the particular family situation, it may be more sensible to take on this non customary approach to raising your family and sustaining a home. Some traditionalists however, regard this as taboo, declaring that women, not men, can guarantee a better upbringing for their children, that there are countless challenges men face in this position, that women do not. Nevertheless, these days, dads are establishing a new role, and are here to prove they are up to the challenge of being “Mr. Mom”.
Being open-minded is a must when it comes to new ways of thinking, especially when an entire society has been shaped by a single customary way of life. It may be hard for some to imagine a life any different than what most have been living for so long. Once a couple decides they want a parent to stay at home with their children, they must then decide which one it will be, and tradition is not always best. Putting aside the time-honored role models of women as caregivers and men as breadwinners, the couple can make this decision in a clear, logical way....
