Staying healthy
In countries like the United States where meat is not as expensive, people choose to be vegetarians because they want to stay healthy. Vegetarians do not eat meat because they think that eating meat is not good for their health and others due to their religious beliefs. I myself became a vegetarian about 2 years ago, and I can see a number of reasons why people should stop eating meat. People should eat vegetables because it leads to a healthier lifestyle; it is ethical, and environment friendly.
First, people who decide to consume vegetables, do it to lead a healthier lifestyle. Nowadays, health is the number one individual and governmental concern. People care about diet, figure, and health when they ask about the vegetarian diet. They believe that if they eat vegetables, they will lead a healthier lifestyle because vegetarian diets tend to be lower in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium; which is reduced the risk of most diseases caused by fats. According to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for America, a vegetarian diet is associated with lower levels of obesity, and reduced risk of certain diseases such as: cancer, high blood pressure, strokes, and diabetes. Additionally, “a 1999 meta-study of five studies comparing vegetarian and non- vegetarian mortality rates in Western countries found that in comparison with regular meat eaters, mortality from ischemic heart disease was 26% lower in vegans.” Furthermore, Medical studies show that the most common cause of death is heart attack and the average man is at 50% risk while a vegetarian man is at a 4% risk. Do vegetarians get enough protein in their diet? The World Health Organization recommends that 4.5% of daily calories be derived from protein. Wheat has 17% of its calories as protein, broccoli has 45% and rice has 8%.
