Government Funding Stem Cell Research
Stem cell research is a very controversial issue in the United States. People who are against it say that it’s murder and not worth destroying embryos just to research something that may cure some diseases. Those who support the research think that it’s worth continuing the research and support the government for funding it. Stem cell research could possibly cure all forms of cancer and many other diseases. A majority of the controversy comes from the fact that the new administration created new laws which took away most of the barriers that were holding the research back. Many people believe in the research and hope to see the benefits of it in the next couple of years. Stem cell research could not only save lives, but help scientists learn more about the growth and development of cells in the human body. If the research keeps progressing like it is has been it could help people from getting sick with common diseases, help people live longer, and possibly help people walk again. All these reasons are why the government should continue to fund stem cell research.
Scientists want to study stem cell because the cells have the capability of becoming the tissue of every other part of the body. For the first day that a person is conceived these little cell replicated and develop organs, tissue, and all the other types of cells in the body (Scolari). “Through research, scientists hope to be able to tap into the power of these cells to regenerate damaged organs or even create new organs from scratch” (Michael Baker). Unlike a standard cell, stem cells have the ability to divide and replicate quickly. Stem cells can develop into specialized types of cell which make up tissue and organs.
