Racism is not a strange issue but it still causes trouble for its victims. From real life situation and especially throughout literature, we can see that stereotype is a cause of unfair things in society. Racist gossips give their victims a hard time struggling with other people’s suspicion. Being thought as a criminal and pulled over by the police on the street is what they can’t avoid. However, to ignore the initial racist gossips and avoid conflicts that racism may cause, those victims usually try to follow what cops and security guards tell them to do although it makes them upset. It points out that racism is an old issue but still a big matter in American culture since they keep judging other people based what they hear about them more than what they see.
Victims of racism are the people who suffer the most by stereotypes about them. Actually, they are harmless and don’t mean to hurt anyone but they are treated as criminals who deserve to be avoided and stayed away from. It doesn’t literally mean that they can’t live with other people but their appearances together with some stereotypes are the main bias for everyone’s caution to them. They are automatically considered different from anyone else, different in a scary way. Thus, we can see that stereotypes might not have opportunity to rise up if people of certain races don’t look different from other people. Especially, they have some features that other races don’t have. Their appearances could be known as a good identity for who they are.
In her essay, Profile of an Arab Daughter, Elmaz Abinader (2005) describes how Arabs are treated in public after the events of September 11. According to the author, her belongings were all poured out on the table as she went through security check at the airport. It just happened to her because she’s an Arab and Arabs are known as terrorists after the collapse of World Trade Center on September 11.
