To represent or not to represent
In 2005, Baseball’s public image was put on the hot seat when Jose Canseco, former baseball player, claimed widespread use of steroids in Major League Baseball. His book, “Juiced,” played a large role in the investigation of steroid use in the major league baseball. Two years later, George J. Mitchell, a former United States Senator, released the “Mitchell Report” which was the results of his twenty-one month investigation into the use of steroids. The report named eighty-nine baseball players who were alleged to have used steroids and/or drugs. Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Rafael Palmeiro, and Mark McGwire were star players named in both the report and book who were found to have used steroids but initially denied using steroids and/or released statements claiming they never intentionally used.
In this case presented to us, we have yet another well-known professional baseball player that is suspected of having used steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. Though he has not been charged, I don’t recommend accepting this account because of the negative spotlight surrounding steroid use. Many players like those I mentioned in my introduction, initially denied using steroids, but were found guilty later and admitted to using steroids. Most public relations efforts are viewed as persuasive communication management and ultimately seek to change the attitudes and behavior of people (Cameron, Wilcox, Shin & Reber, 2008, p. 209). Media coverage has helped the public form an attitude and belief that the majority - if not all players accused - are guilty of its use. The public’s opinion is justified when players like Alex Rodriquez, David Ortiz, and Andy Pettite test positive.
