Steroids In Major League Baseball

Imagine that two students are going to class for their final exam. One of the students has
stayed up all night studying, knowing that this exam was important to his future. The instructor hands out the final exam and to his surprise, his fellow classmate pulls out the answers to the test. The instructor has seen the whole incident, but walks away without doing anything. The first student has worked hard to achieve his goal and his classmate is going to get away with cheating. Coaches, players, and league owners have also turned a blind eye when it comes to the use of performance-enhancing drugs like steroids. Major League Baseball (MLB) players who use non-prescription illegal steroids are getting away with cheating and should be subject to stronger penalties. MLB has clearly not been successful in the prevention of illegal steroid use by athletes in baseball.
Why do MLB players use steroids? Steroids increase the muscle mass of athletes, which in turn makes the athletes feel stronger and faster, but have been banned by all sports due to the serious health risks that can occur. King (2007) states, “The serious medical side effects associated with steroid use include the elevated risk of heart attacks and stroke, increase in cholesterol level, liver disease, and kidney disease” (¶ 10). Yet, even with these serious medical consequences, MLB players are still testing positive for the use of steroids, which are illegal without a prescription. Currently, there is an ad on television that describes the danger of steroid use. If MLB wants to help with the prevention of the use of steroids then they should also make use of television advertising to promote a steroid free environment.
