The Newest Generation of Wife and Husband
What does one think of when husband and wife come to mind? Is it the stereotypical husband who goes to work and supports the family and the wife who, “belongs in the kitchen” and cares for the children and home? In Judy Brady’s essay “I Want a Wife” this is precisely what happens. Brady argues that husbands are much more of a boss and delegator while the wives, as Brady’s husband states, “wants[s] a wife who will keep [his] house clean” (1) and hold the roles of a submissive servant. However, times and society have changed. Marital stereotypes have morphed in the past century as wives are seen given the opportunity to work and be more independent, as husbands now care for children and are much more involved with the children and household. In the article “Fatherhood 2.0” co-authored by Lisa Cullen and Lev Grossman, shows how fathers now take part in the role of a parent, downsizing the stereotypical of the husband being a boss. Brady’s old stereotyped roles of wife and husband as a submissive servant and insensitive man have changed in which the present wife has developed freedom and independence as the husband transitions to a parent and caregiver.
Brady describes the wife as a submissive servant in the husband’s life. She lives her life based on her husband’s world. Brady defines the wife as a housekeeper and one who will take care of his physical needs. This describes her as a wife who will take care of their kids, at all times plus working to keep the house clean. She will make the appointments for the children and make sure they are attended to at all times. Brady continues on to describe his wife of one that will make sure the kids have a social life with their friends. She will not only make sure their kids’ needs are attended to, but she will also attend to his physical needs.
