Labor unions play an important role in our country’s workforce and the quality of life that many families encounter. Labor unions continue to serve the same purpose from which they were founded, which is to fight for pay, better working conditions, and job safety. According to Mello, J., (2014) labor relations is a key strategic issue for organizations because the nature of the relationship between the employer and employees can have a significant impact on morale, motivation, and less productivity. Labor unions are continuing to face the challenges of high paid executives who salaries continually increase while the middle and lower class level workers continue to encounter financial problems that occur from layoffs, stagnant wages, and all increased levels of unemployment.
Although labor unions continue to face many instances of combating pay disparities between executive, middle, and lower class workers, labor unions also face many difficulties as they are not as attractive as they once were. Labor unions face the issue of remaining relevant in employment relations. Many employers understand the importance of their actual work force not just their executive level management and as a result or ensuring that their middle and lower level employees are being afforded the pay, working conditions, and safety that they should be afforded.
