Academics are a major stress causer for many college students and often lead to more serious health issues. Most students perceive college to be a place where getting good grades is a must and anything less than perfect is bad. This is certainly not true of all colleges, but all too often it becomes a problem for many students whom them experience academic stress. Academic stress is associated with a variety of negative health outcomes, including depression and physical illness (MacGeorge). Stomach problems, headaches, or even chest pains are some of the many physical illnesses that can result from academic stress. Not surprisingly, the workload of college is significantly more involved than the high school workload, and it comes with less hand-holding from parents and teachers. This being said classes become more difficult; unlike high school it getting good grades gets harder and low grades now become an issue. Low grades can cause a loss of self esteem a mental effect of academic stress in some students which can lead to depression or in some cases physical illness. When one receives a low grade it may lower their self esteem and they may feel they are unable to do the work that is required of them. Many students give up and or quit in these types of situations because they feel they cannot do it or simply think they are not good enough.
Improper time management is another big cause of college student’s stress which can prove to be and even bigger problem as time goes on.
The inability to properly manage ones time is a problem for many college students and when one does not properly manage their time school can become very stressful. Paper deadlines can become minutes away with having only written half the required paper. Not properly managing ones time can cause you to get behind in your school work and stress over how you will ever catch up in you work.
