Jackie Robinson
Born January/ 31/ 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. His parents we Mallie McGriff and Tony Robinson. He was the youngest of five kids. Robinson along with his mom and other siblings moved to Pasadena, California after his dad left them. Robinson went to Washington Junior High School & John Muir High School both in Pasadena, California. In high school he lettered in four different sports football, basketball, track and baseball all on a varsity level. He played shortstop and catcher on the baseball team. Guard on the basketball team. Quarterback on the football team and did broad jump on the track team. After high school Robinson attended Pasadena Junior College to play all four sports he did in high school. During college Robinson was drafted into the military but fractured his ankle which delayed his deployment. After graduating from Junior College Robinson transferred to UCLA to pursue his athletic career. He was the first athlete to letter varsity in four different sports at UCLA. He won a track championship in long jump. In 1942 Robinson was redrafted to the military and was stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas. While in the military Robinson got restationed in Fort Hood, Texas but while their he got in trouble for not moving to the back of a military bus and was arrested and taken to court where he got charged with multiple offenses after that he moved back to California. In 1945 Robinson was offered a contract to play in the Negro League to play Professional baseball. In 1946 Jackie Robinson accepted a contract to play for the Kansas City Royals. On February/10 /1946 Robinson married his wife Rachel Isum. In 1946 just a year with Kansas City’s minor league team Robinson moved back to California to play with the Los Angeles Red Devils. In 1947 just six days before opening day Robinson got called up to the Brooklyn Dodgers pro team. He made his debut April/15/1967. At Ebbet’s Field where there were over 25,000 on hand to watch.
