Recently I visited a girlfriend and her family here in Maple Valley that had been in there new home for just about three years now. As I was standing in there family room however I was in awe at the bareness and sterile feeling that consumed me. A sofa , plasma two lamps and a coffee table were all my eyes beheld. Immediately leading me to wonder. Where were the framed scenes of color or the tufted throw pillows and woven baskets? Was it to much to ask to see a throw rug or god forbid a sculpture?
I then with an immense amount of tact ,of coarse asked her why she had not decorated after all this time? Her response was merely “ I hate that stuff”.
Puzzled I thought to myself how could this be? A woman very much like myself a mother a wife a entrepreneur hates to decorate? Weren’t we all born with that internal since of linens and silks ,cocktail tables and vintage chairs? Thus began my journey of the real families of today and there homes. Turns out she wasn’t the oddball and I was. A majority of our neighbors friends and families homes just don’t have that flare because they don’t have the time money or knowledge. Here is my response to that.
My first tip is this. Color, yes I said color . Now color doesn’t always mean paint , so if that’s a step your just to scared of we can take this slow. My best suggestion is pick up a couple home interior magazines and find some shades that catch your eye . Then venture out to the hardware or paint store
Preferably our local ones which have great staff that can assist you.
Choose One or two swatches and take these home and pin them to your walls. Live with them a day or two and let them grow on you. Then jump in! Grab a roller and add some color to your life. Also as I said before a great alternative to paint is art . So go buy that beautiful golden framed piece of the Italian countryside with all its greens and yellows.
Paint can be reversed and art can be returned but time can not rewind.
