Summery & Reality The book I chose for my report was Remains Silentby Michael Baden and Linda Kenney. Remains Silent features a spunky, ambitious lawyer named Philomena Manfreda, nicknamed Manny, in search for justice for those who need it most. She first meets Dr. Jake Rosen, the New York Chief Medical Examiner, during a case where Manny feels she will inevitably win. However, Dr. Rosen finds medical evidence that forces Manny to lose her case. Soon after Dr. Rosen receives a call from his beloved mentor, Pete, asking for his assistance to investigate remains found in field soon to be a new mall. These remains, however, carry an unexpected weight that soon creeps into Dr. Rosen’s and Manny’s lives. After finding the remains, Pete dies a sudden death. Dr. Rosen suspected foul play and decided to investigate by performing an autopsy on Pete’s body. Even after this death, more start showing up dead. The remains found in the field lead them to a mental hospital that was once located nearby the field. From there, they also suspected foul play. During this entire time, their investigation was being sabotaged by a mysterious party. From here on out, you will have to read to find out what happens next! Not only does the novel stimulate the forensic interests but also the mushy-gushy interest. The novel cleverly intertwines science, suspense, and romantic relationships. I would highly suggest this novel to anyone interested in forensics. Remains Silent stays true to the science and realities of being a pathologist and lawyer and steers clear from “Hollywood-izing” the novel.
