Creativity, Innovation, and Technology Audio Transcript This is the intro slide, entitled “Creativity, Innovation, and Technology”. Just want to talk very briefly about some elements of creativity. I usually ask students in my classes if they define themselves as creative, and unfortunately most of them say they do not believe that they are creative. But these are some of the elements that we see in creative people. People who have these particular attributes tend to score very high on the creative scale, including things like inspiration, having insight to solve problems, envisioning new solutions to the problems, being intuitive and balancing that intuitive with being analytical, and being ingenious, which is not the same as being a genius. However, creativity is not the same as innovation. There’s a lot of discussion about whether or not creativity is a necessary ingredient for innovation. To be honest with you, I think I see people who are both creative and innovative. On the other hand I see creative people who are not innovative, and I see innovative people who are not creative, if that makes any sense. Let me explain that to you. I have a friend who’s got about 400 patents, very creative, but he’s never commercialized any of those patents. I have another mutual friend who has no patents at all, but has started several businesses using other people’s patents. So on one hand, we have Jim who’s very creative but not innovative; conversely, we have Bill, who basically is a very innovative person not necessarily creative. And I think this is something that most people have to come to grips with. Even though creativity is important, the reality is, innovation is different because you actually take those ideas, you take that information, you solve problems, and most importantly, you give life to the creativity.
