It was another restless night. I stared at the familiar brown, wrinkled ceiling of cardboard. My mind was still preoccupied on the adventure, exploration, and discovery outside our candy box. Tossing and turning, I suddenly felt a rumbling sensation sear across my body. The ceiling opened, and a mysterious hand reached into our box. A rush of cold air ran through me as the box opened. Immediately, I got up and ran to the center of our box, our meeting place. Though the chaos, I saw my father and Cane standing next to each other in the corner. Cane was a seemingly normal candy cane in my community, but I always had a strange feeling about him. His blood-red stripes across his body made me uneasy at times. My father was paralyzed with fear, while Cane had a mischievous, sinister look on face. What was he planning? As the hand reached toward him, he swiftly grabbed my father and threw him in front of him. The hand closed shut and I heard the muffled screams of my father as the box closed. That was it. My father was gone to the front of the store. A ping of anger shocked throughout my body and I blindly ran towards Cane. When I reached the corner, he was gone, and a heard a snicker from behind me. “He he he he,” It said. Holding back tears, I saw an opening to the outside world. Without even thinking, I sprinted toward the entrance to the brand new world. This was my dream, but I wish it did not come like this. I covered my eyes as I stepped out. My eyes eventually adjusted and I saw a seemingly endless amount of boxes just like mine, lined up carefully on shelves. Imagine the possibilities! “Gotta stay focused,” I thought. I climbed down the poll to the ground carefully until I felt the cold, hard ground upon my feet. Then the harsh truth hit me. These boxes on the ground were abandoned. Stringy cobwebs and holes were spread across the boxes, and the smell mold and mildew penetrated my nose. One in particular especially grabbed...
