Love through Literature Classical literature has revolutionized reading through the years by forcing the reader to connect with the story to truly understand the real meanings of the stories. “The Storm”, written by Kate Chopin, is a very deep and confusing story. There are conflicts between personal morals and true love. “What we Talk about when We Talk about Love”, written by Raymond Carver, is a very symbolic story about the many different types of love and the conflicts that involve love itself. “Jealous Husband Returns in Form of Parrot”, written by Robert Olen Butler, gave a perception of do not let time stand in the way of what your true feelings are telling you. Also, the story made one truly identify a person’s true character and how to understand a person’s exact feelings. These author’s have very clearly identified similarities in the symbolism of nature to a person’s reactions, the theme of love and how it is a much unknown subject in today’s world and how jealousy can affect a person’s relationship in the most dangerous of ways. These three authors’ all have different ways of showing symbolism, but in the end every author brings the story together to help the reader see the importance of the symbols. Chopin’s writes “the Storm,” which relates two main ideas, the overwhelming storm and Alcee the man on his high horse. The storm symbolizes Alcee, moving very swiftly and precisely, and then leaving the main characters heart, Calixta, confused and thrashed as a storm only means complete devastation. Carver uses symbolism by relating the characters feelings about love to the sun and total darkness in “What We Talk about When We Talk about Love”. The four characters sitting at the table start the afternoon talking about love and what it means to them and how happy they are. The sun is shining bright, and then at the end of the story the four people are all sitting in total complete silence and not fully knowing what love is, total darkness has fallen...
