THE OUTSIDERS
At the age of 17, S E Hinton wrote her first book, The Outsiders. It’s an inspiration because it shows how young adolescents are living and behaving. It’s also about a boy called Pony boy Curtis who is a product of the time and place they lived.
It is narrated from the point of view of Pony boy Curtis. It takes place in the 1960’s in USA. There are two rival groups called the greasers or soc’s (short for socials) who are separated by status. The Socs are the rich kids who live on the west side whereas the greasers and the poor kids lived on the east side and have hard-knock backgrounds.
One night the greasers go to a movie and pony boy and Johnny meet two socs girls called Cherry and Marcia. As pony boy and Johnny walk home the girls’ boyfriends pull up beside them. Later on, pony boy has a domestic with Darry and Ponyboy gets hit so he runs away. He goes to grab Johnny and they go to the park, I an attempt to save pony boy, Johnny kills Bob who tries to drown him. With the help of Dally they escape to an abandoned church in Windrixville to hide from the police and the media. The two boys cut their hair and even though Pony boy doesn’t want it he gets it done. Dally is the one that gives money to the boys for supplies. One day he picks up the boys and Johnny confesses that they should turn themselves in. The church catches on fire and the 3 of them save the children trapped inside. As Johnny retrieves the last children, a burning piece of timber slaps Johnny across his back. They all go to the hospital. Ponyboy is in there for a short while. That evening is the fight between the greasers and the socs. The greasers win the fight. They go to tell Johnny they won but Johnny dies. Before Johnny died he told Ponyboy to “Stay Gold”.
Dally gets worked up about it and he goes to his grocery store and gets shot and dies while trying to escape. For a while ponyboy blames himself for bobs death. He goes to his court trial and...
