Tecumseh

One of the Greatest Native American leaders of his time, Tecumseh led paved the way for great Native American leaders. Determine to get back what originally belonged to his people he fought as much as he could and cared about his Shawnee people. Tecumseh which means “the panther passing across” was born in 1768 in central Ohio. He was Pucksinwah’s second son, the warrior who was killed at the battle point Pleasant. Before Pucksinwahs death he told his oldest son cheesuaka , to train his younger brother Tecumseh to be the ultimate warrior and never make peace with the whites. Cheesuaka kept his word and taught his brother very well which also made them closer than ever. It is said that Tecumseh ran in his first battle he courage never went down again. (http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Cove/8286/warrior.html) When Tecumseh was in his twenties he and his brother made long expeditions, visiting other tribes north and west of the Shawnees. These voyages were considered the final rite of passage in the adult world by the Shawnee. This introduced Tecumseh to other tribes and traditions. One evening on Tecumseh and Cheesuaka final journey Cheesuaka calmly predicted his own death the next day. That noon Cheesuaka was fatally shot while storming a fort with a Cherokee war party. After the death of his brother he returned from his sad trip in 1790 and met up with his adopted brother Bluejacket. They were planning how to save their territory from the white settlers. When showing his ability of strength, skill, and leadership he began to gain militant followers including his younger brother Tenskwatwa. Although Tecumseh was a Shawnee many of his followers weren’t, they often viewed him as a trouble maker and rule breaker.
