Texting while driving causes around 1,600,000 accidents per year in the US and causes at least 11 deaths every day. More often than not, people see texting while driving as no big deal, but I am here to tell each and every one of you why this must not go on any longer. Texting in general can be distracting from anything, but when you’re operating a motor vehicle the effects of this distraction could be fatal. This bad habit is one that is present in all states whether it’s illegal or not. It is a shame that people know how much of an extremely dangerous position they are putting themselves in and yet they still text and drive anyways. We are not invincible and we could all be a victim of this epidemic if we are not careful and the statistics of accidents and fatalities while using a cell phone on the road shows us this. Something that is so misleading to teens about texting and driving is that while parents say not to do it, they often cave in to the tendency of texting while driving. 15% of young adults have seen their parent’s text and drive while being told it is the wrong thing to do. Even worse than this is 34% of teens have admitted to texting while driving. This is how accidents and fatalities happen, and they happen often. It is true that 77% of young adults feel they can safely text while driving but it is also true that they are 100% wrong. Around 25% of all road accidents have been caused by texting and driving. That’s a large 1/4th of all accidents. Not only this but as we all know drunk driving is extremely dangerous and illegal, but yet driving while texting is just as dangerous as driving after having four beers and it is seen as no big deal. Even if you just look down to text quick, in this time it is as if you are driving without eyesight for five seconds or maybe even longer. The facts don’t lie, but they do tell us that this is a very prevalent issue that needs to be taken care of.
