Gym Candy Character Analysis
Mick Johnson in the book Gym Candy was a unique character because of his competitive characteristics and mind power to become someone who his father once was. His willingness to anything to achieve this goal not only brought fury into his life, but fame as well. The author shows this through key events in Micks life and his addictions that came with it.
Mick became a competitive athlete at a young age. Inspired by his father who once was the running back in the NFL. Throughout the novel, he sets out goals to diminish his opponents, not only his father’s past achievements. Being a freshman on Varsity he was on the short end of the stick in speed, agility, and strength. Then he began to get the cutting edge after he started to inject steroids. It was not long after that they began to show the negative effects. That steroids took a toll on Mick when he encountered a large argument with his own teammates. This characteristic is unique because of Mick’s willingness to ruin his own career, and health by cheating his way into being the best of the worse.
Mick Johnson in the novel Gym Candy was also a Leader. This is a vital characteristic in this novel, because of the sport football. Mick had grown up being around football, he’s been a leader all his life. Being a freshman on varsity made it more difficult for Mick to become a leader of the pack. For Mick to gain this attribute he spent longer hours at the gym lifting, and running to become the strongest and fastest on the team. Towards the end of the novel his team faced a local team name Foothill, and Mick was able to lead his team with a victory without any injections or drug use.
