 Lualhati Bautista’s Dekada 70 may be one of the greatest novel wrote in the history of Philippine Literature. Years ago, it was adapted into film starring Vilma Santos and Christopher De Leon, and other young male actors. The story shows a lot of Philippine culture, lifestyle and events in the 70’s.
The first thing I saw in this movie is the good relationship of the families. How Amanda and Julian handle their children very well and the way they respect each other. It makes me wonder, why in our generation, most of the families were not the same as the Bartolome family? Modernization really changes the way we live. As the children grow, they become aware of what’s happening around them. There’s always an uprising against the government and the revolutionist perspective came to them. They started to changed and live their lives on their own way. I was taken aback as I continued to watch the movie. The people were mad at Marcos government. They had this protest all over and over, saying that Marcos is a “Papet, Corrupt, etc. Yes? Maybe it is true. But for me, Marcos was the one of the best president of our country. If he did not become the president, Philippines would still be in the third world countries. He made Philippines at its finest at his era. Our country was rank as one of the richest country in Asia. Making the GNP of the country stood at $11.5 billion by 1980, which represented a 6.6% average annual growth rate. The 1980 GNP was four times greater than the GNP in 1972. Rice production increased from 5.1 million metric tons in 1972 to 7.25 million metric tons in 1980 due to Masagana 99, and so on. But still, Marcos had also committed crimes in pursuing the highest status of our country and that what makes people revolt. We cannot blame each other side anyway. Right and wrong are not what separate us from our enemies. It’s our different standpoint, our perspective that separates us. Both sides blame one another. There’s no good or bad side. Just two...
