The Butcher of Rostov
ANDREI CHIKATILO

Andrei Chikatilo

Andrei Chikatilo was one of the most sadistic serial killers to have ever lived. He was a notorious Russian serial killer known by many nicknames such as The Butcher of Rostov, the Red Ripper, the Rostov Ripper, Citizen X, or Shelter Belt Killer. Chikatilo was born in the Ukraine state of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or USSR on October 16, 1936. Andrei was known for his gruesome murders of an astonishing 56 women and children (girls and boys) between 1978 and 1990 to which he confessed to. While he admitted to the obscene amount of grotesque and brutal murders, he was only convicted and charged with 52 of the 56 murders.

He would lure his victims into secluded areas before brutally killing them through a variety of different techniques which involved slashing, stabbing, decapitating, strangling and drowning. When confessing, he described the murders, scenes, body positions, and locations which only police knew at the time, proving he was without a doubt, the killer. When describing the murder of a 19 year old student, Anna Lemesheva, he was quoted as saying “The girl’s cries and the way she moved while I was stabbing her drove me into a state of sexual frenzy.” His victims would typically suffer from 30 to 50 stab wounds and have their mouths gagged with dirt and leaves before he would proceed to use his knife and his own teeth mutilate their bodies Once dead, Andrei Chikatilo would mutilate his victims’ genitals and cannibalize them while drinking their blood as well as cannibalizing other body parts such as the tips of their noses or tongues. In his earliest murders, his pattern would be to go for the eyes slashing across the eye sockets and removing the eyeballs. He did this because he believed that by doing this, his victims would keep an imprint of his face in their eyes even into the afterlife.
