The game of chess is thought to have originated in what is now known as Northern India or Afghanistan during the Gupta empire where its early form in the sixth century was known as “caturanga” which translates as four divisions of the military- infantry, cavalry, elephants and chariot represented by the pieces today which later on would evolve into the modern pieces such as pawn, bishop, rook and respectively. “The oldest written reference to chess is dated as far back as 600 A.D.
