As to the question, “Do members of your community look like you?” Yes, most of them do. The city, in which I live, Chicago, is a mostly segregated city. Blacks live in areas where other blacks live, whites live around whites, and so on and so forth. Most people in my neighborhood look the same as me because they are the same race as I am which is African American. When I was growing up, my neighborhood mainly consisted of African Americans as well, without much diversity in the area. When I moved to California I began to start experiencing other races and cultures. It was sort of a culture shock to me because I was not used to seeing or interacting with those other than African Americans. It was then that I really experienced how diverse this country could be. My experiences living as a child up to the point of moving out on my own shaped how I perceive people of other races and it prepared me to get along with all cultures in my community.
I have noticed that leaders in my community treat all people in my community the same. They do not make a difference because of the color of skin or race. I believe to be a leader; you cannot make a difference in people. All people are human regardless of their outside appearances. The only difference is that we do not all look the same. I know that sometimes we think that leaders give preferential treatment to people of their same color, and sometimes this may be true, but it is not right.
Members of my community treat people who are like me well if they are like me. On the other hand, I have seen a difference in treatment to people of another color or race. For instance, I once was in a convenient store and there was a woman there who appeared to be Mexican American, the store clerk, who was African American, overlooked the woman and proceeded to help the other customer first when the Mexican American woman was there first.
