The Commonality of Abortion

Abortions are very common. In fact, more than 1 out of 3 women in the U.S. have an abortion by the time they are 45 years old. Since the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision that got rid of all laws regulating abortion, it has become one of our nation’s most debatable issues. Forbidding abortion would have the effect of forcing one person’s beliefs onto another person. That’s like me trying to prevent someone from drinking because I think it’s wrong? Can I tell two people that they have to stay married because I don’t believe in divorce? The answer to these questions are no. It’s not right to believe that someone can control the lives of another just because they believe something different then the other person. Abortion is a personal issue and should be handled by the person involved, not the government or anyone else.
Here is a hypothetical situation. An 18 year old woman is trying to get a good education so that one day she can have a good job that gets paid well. She works to put herself through college so there is no extra time or money to take care of a child. One day she hopes to marry and have children but none of this can happen at this point in her life. Having kids right now could even ruin her life. So she takes birth control to prevent any of this from happening. But no type of birth control is completely 100% effective. She just happens to be one of those unlucky people that end up getting pregnant. She wants to have kids but isn’t ready for them now. Haveing a kid is a big commitment that she is not ready for. Everything she planned on doing could be ruined if she had the child. She has to think about the child and not just herself and with the way things are now the child wouldn’t have a very good life. She has a hard time with her decision but makes sure that she knows all of the outcomes and decides that she does not want to have the child. Now she has a new problem.
