The Consequences of College Students Cheating on Exams. First of all cheating means being dishonest about an action that you took. Studies have shown that college students often cheat and lie. There are different methods of cheating. Students, who bring pieces of paper, make unnecessary trips to the bathroom; obtain a copy of the test beforehand, have a cheat sheet during the exam, altar grades in the record book, or steal an exam from a teaching assistant all can be forms of cheating. I believe any incident of cheating is wrong and unacceptable, but unfortunately it is becoming more and more accepted by students as time goes on. A study was done by the California-based Josephson Institute of ethics. This study interviewed 8,965 young people throughout the nation. The results of the study show that people between the ages of fifteen to thirty are more likely to be dishonest and irresponsible than those in other age groups. Sixteen percent of college students admitted to cheating on an exam. I could only speculate how many students lied on these surveys and did not admit to cheating. Also, students have admitted to having paid another student to take the test for them. This method is obviously used more frequently in a university setting where teachers are not familiar with every one of their students. There are students who get caught cheating, but more time than not they are good enough liars to get themselves out of trouble. There are students who have admitted that they are ashamed of cheating, however they claim that the pressure they receive to make good grades is worth the guilt. What cheaters in college don’t realize is that getting caught cannot only result in embarrassment but also in a failing grade or a possible expulsion. One obvious question would be: Why not study to earn the good grades the answer seems simple to the students of today, why spend all that time studying when they can cheat and get an A.
