Hypocrisy is when someone supports or believes an opinion or moral but doesn’t do the actions that support what they believe. In the book The Crucible as well as real life, people display hypocrisy. John Hale, Abigail Williams, and Mary Warren all display hypocrisy in the book The Crucible. Police officers display hypocrisy in everyday life today.
John Hale is a specialist in witchcraft. The people of the village called for him to come to their village to help with their witchcraft problem hoping he could fix it for them. Not long before John Hale came to the village, he encountered a witch. There is no doubt that John Hale believes in witchcraft. John is a hypocrite because even though he does believe in witchcraft, he believes John Proctor when he tells them that the girls are lying and that there is no witchcraft going on. Hale doesn’t even go to the effort to hear the girl’s side before siding with Proctor. As a specialist in witchcraft, I would think he would be on the girl’s side and try to get the people responsible for the witchcraft.
Abigail Williams is a young girl in the play who lies to everyone and threatens the girls that are lying with her that if they tell the truth then she will kill them. Abigail claims to be Christian but she sins a lot. Abigail threatens to kill her friends, she has sex without marriage, she lies to the court and to everyone about seeing the devil and gets a lot of people hung while doing so. Even while doing all this, she still practices Christianity.
Mary Warren is a young girl who was caught with the other girls in the woods dancing. Mary knows that all of the girls are lying and she goes along with it so that she won’t get in trouble. John Proctor doesn’t want his wife to be accused as a witch so John tries to make Mary Warren confess to the court that the girls are just lying and they never made contact with the devil.
