The Definition of a Terrible Roommate


Roommate can be a comforting term to virgin ears; it could almost be euphony with the way it rolls off the tongue. But once you’ve experienced a roommate for the first time, you’ll never bask in the glory of the term again. When separating the two key words in the term, you come up with two simple terms: room and mate. Room being defined as “a space that is or may be occupied” and mate being a sliding definition depending on where you’re from. Mate is that silly term that some people use to address a friend. Never trust an Englishman with mate; chances are if he uses that term, he’s wanting to “bash yer ‘ead in” or something else violent that isn’t so stereotypical. It’s safe to say that in most cases, the mate in roommate is generally used as the latter. What makes roommate so unappealing? If you were to be completely honest, there are good roommates that are tolerable, but they are few and far in between. It’s awful to come across a bad roommate, and it’s worse to have to experience one in college. So, what exactly is a bad roommate?
A bad roommate is someone who eats all of your hot pockets. The thought of college is frightening, and building up to your college career, you will hear the terms “broke student” and “ramen” quite frequently in your research. Lack of money is a reality in college, and this will result in some really poor food choices on your part. Remember that 24 pack of Kraft Dinner your mom bought when you were in high school? You complained that you did not want to eat that cheap and awful stuff. Just you wait until you don’t have a proper oven in your room; that stuff will look like macaroni gold once you hit dorm life. Equipped with a toaster, microwave, and kettle, your food options are going to be very sparse, and you are going to be desperately searching for new and exciting ways to eat tomato soup from the can.
