The Disadvantages of Being an Adult Student By: Jamie Moore Struggling with the time spent out of school and starting back is another big issue for the adult student. Many adult students in the college classroom seem to struggle with this. The dynamics of effective studying techniques are almost forgotten once having been out of school even just a short while. Just like with most things in life, if it is not in your normal routine, you tend to losethe consistency of performing that act. Then the need to ask for help comes into play. When you are ten or more years older than many of your classmates, asking for help may be embarrassing, but if you don’t ask for help, whatdo you do? This thought process plagues most of us in the adult student community. With the gap in studying dynamics and the embarrassment of asking a younger student for help, going back to school can be very difficult for most adult students. My mother used to tell me that the longer you are out of school, the harder it is to go back. I never fully understood what this meant when I heard it, but now I know fully what it means. Once you have been out of school for a while and have begun other aspects of your life, such as family and career, going to school is much more difficult. The constant management of time, family, and school obligations can be overwhelming. Combining all of those factors with being out of school for ten to fifteen years, and your decision to go back to school may seem outrageous. I recommend to everyone as they leave high school to go straight to college. You have fewer responsibilities and can dedicate all of your time to your studies.
