Essay 2
The Freedom Writers were a group of kids from Wilson High School in Long Beach, California helped change the world around them for the better. Do not think that these kids didn’t have help from anyone because, they did. The help they got the most was from a couple of very caring individuals by the name of Erin Gruwell and John Tu. These two people helped the Freedom Writers in every way they could possibly think of. If it were not for these extraordinary adults helping to push these kids to all they could be then we as a society would have never heard of the Freedom Writers. In turn the students of room 203 would have be unable to give back to the community and the caring adults that gave to them to begin with.
Erin Gruwell isn’t just your ordinary teacher who has her students read a story and answer the same pointless redundant questions. She tries to make the stories come to life and get the students to connect and get involved with the story whatever way she can possibly think of. She does everything she can from taking the students on field trips all the way to jumping up on a desk dancing and singing. Not every way she tries to connect with her students is as extreme as jumping on the desk acting like a crazy person. One of simplest way she was able to connect to the students was to have all of them anonymously write in a diary. The students knowing that they had this place to say what they feel really helped them feel comfortable. Having this place that makes them feel comfortable gave them the chance to break down racial barriers and see people for who they really are.
Erin Gruwell isn’t the only adult in these kids life trying to influence them for the better. There is a very important man by the name of John Tu. He has been there for these students in every way he possibly can. He does everything form go on field trips all the way to donating money and supplies to the class.
