Nick unfolds the elaborate story of Jay Gatsby and his romance with Daisy Buchanan. Nick is a relatively new resident of West Egg neighborhood whose neighbor is the notorious Mr. Gatsby. Nick’s perspective provides an interesting and appropriate point of view for the story. Nick is still settling into this queer neighborhood and suddenly meets a Mr. Gatsby, an extraordinarily wealthy man who is more than eager to befriend him. This is a situation Nick both is astounded by and does not reject, perhaps because he is prompted by curiosity. He is soon introduced to a circle of friends with a tangle of relationship woes and the world all seems to surreal to be true; a dream. When Nick tells the story the reader too gets the bizarre feeling that the whole story is almost like a dream, no matter how engrossed he or she may be while reading the novel.
Nick point of view is the most adequate one for the story. He, like the reader, is being introduced to these characters. Nick observes these diverse personalities for the first times and both Nick and the reader pay attention and learn fresh things about the characters. While Nick learns, the reader learns, creating an element of suspense. For example, Nick learns about Gatsby’s and Daisy’s faithfulness to each other and their romance before Daisy was married. If the story was from Gatsby or Daisy’s point of view this perhaps would have been unfolded earlier on in the story. The characters would probably tell all there is to tell all at once and there would be no secrets left. On the other hand, Nick learns it gradually from them and there is constantly an aura of mystery.
This story is told in the view of first person observer throughout the majority of the book so Nick is the best narrator. This way, the reader gets to know more about the most interesting characters and not as much about Nick.
