The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is an iconic part of american literature. The book tells a beautiful tale of a love story between Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, but what is the book really about? I believe that Fitzgerald wrote the book to portray the American Dream with a not so fairytale ending. The novel efficiently explains his thoughts on why he thinks the American Dream will never work out. I also believe that the book portrays how people are inhumane and dishonest to themselves when chasing after the American Dream and money.
Daisy Buchanan, one of the main characters portrays the American Dream perfectly. Shes the one that everyone wants, she has everything from her white mansion to her white dress and her fancy cars, shes the golden girl. She married into the rich family of her husband Tom Buchanan, but you have to question the morality behind the marriage. All throughout the book, Gatsby, the newly rich party boy from West Egg, does everything with the intention of reconnecting with the love of his life, Daisy. When they do, it seems as though Daisy and Gatsby are madly in love, while the marriage between her and Tom lacks faith and is slowly crumbling. So why hadn’t Daisy waited for Gatsby, why did she marry Tom if she truly loved someone else? She was chasing after the American Dream.
As Gatsby was away at war Tom proposed to Daisy, and Daisy, truly believing that Gatsby wasn’t coming back from the war, accepted, but not without writing to Gatsby to ask if he had other plans for her. He got the letter late as post wasn’t as fast back then and couldn’t get his response pleading for her to wait for him back in time to stop the wedding, Daisy was inconsolable, but why should she be if she was marrying someone she loved? Because Tom was the backup plan, the easy way. Tom had the money to give her everything and anything she wanted, Gatsby didn’t.
