The book The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins is the story about two characters, Katniss and Peeta from Districts Twelve participating in the dangerous Hunger Games. Every year around the Capitol, the land of “Panem” must choose a girl and a boy who are between 12-18 years-old to compete in the Hunger Games. Based on the rules made by authority of the Gamemakers, only one person could survive in the end of the game. The players need to use their natural talents to avoid being killed by others and the last person who survived could win respect and honor, it is a good chance for those children who suffered in poverty to make their life better. The people from the Capitol like to watch the killing between the children on TV for entertainment. The main character Katniss Everdeen survived this terrifying Hunger Games and was able to defeat the other Careers due to her love of her family, her excellent hunting skills and her cleverness.
Katniss’ love and caring for her family provided her strength to continue and fight in the Hunger Games. Katniss supports her family by poaching animals outside the enclosure of the twelfth district even though “poaching [carries] the severest of penalties” (Collins 5). She had totake the risk in order to feed her family. Their District is already short of food, and since Katniss’ mother is ill, and Primrose so young, Katniss had to take care of her family. When she replaces her younger sister, Primrose to compete in the Hunger Games, she knows it could bring her death, but she had to do it for the love of her sister. Katniss “volunteered as tribute” (22). because Primrose could not survive the Games. In order to protect Primrose from harm, Katniss had to go.
