The Igbo
The Igbo tribe is an African tribe that is from Nigeria. There are a lot of interesting things about this tribe. Like the fact that the area their village is in can get scorchingly hot, to the point where people either walk around naked, or wear a thin layer of cloth. Igboland, Nigeria is the name of the place there village is located. Since Igboland is in a dense forest, it is common for people to pack machetes to enable themselves to maneuver around with ease. The machetes’ also serve as a weapon against undomesticated animals.
Their language is unique because it is not just based on how words sound, but it is also based on pitch and how it is said. One word that sounds the same, and is also spelled the same way can have a completely different meaning just based on the tone and pitch is what said in. The Igbo people use proverbs and idioms casually.
These people are extremely devout to their religion, and they also worship many gods. They believe that their highest level of god is Chukwu. Then under Chukwu there is a level of less powerful gods called Umuagbara, and then there are the spirits of people who have passed called Ndi Ichie. They are not scared of death because they believe that death is just a transition to the afterlife. However, they also believe in reincarnation. Every tribe has a priest and a place of worship.
However, things started to change after Nigeria was invaded by Britain. Women are now treated lesser than men. They are often treated as slaves rather than people, which is sad. Women are also forced to be taught things at school such as cleaning, cooking, and nursing.
Igbo housing used to be made up of mud, but this changed when electricity was introduced; houses are now made up of cement blocks and iron ceilings.
