The Importance on Insurance in Counseling

Insurance is one of the most important things that a counselor must have and understand. Once entering the field of counseling, it is a very dangerous move for a person to do so without protection, and that is what insurance is aimed to do for the professional. Counseling is such a subjective science that it is almost inevitable that one will at one point or another be questioned to the point that he or she will wish he or she had a good insurance policy on his or her practice. Not to say every counselor uses his or her insurance, but it makes a more comfortable and a safer atmosphere for a counselor to have it, especially if the counselor is one who works with more high risk cases, such as personality disorders, substance abuse disorders, and/or children.
Not only is it important for a counselor to have a good insurance policy on his or her practice, it is also important for the counselor to understand insurance policies well before choosing the correct one. For example, many policies will throw in conditions of coverage, where dates the claim were filed and other provisions must be met in order for the person to be covered. For example, some insurance companies will make it a must that the person should be covered by a policy for the duration of the event being claimed, for when the claim was made, right up to the point at where the counselor is now. Other companies might not be as strict, but also might have conditions that a therapist or counselor would really want to be sure about before using the insurance company.
Another thing a counselor would want to be careful about when pertaining to insurance would be if the counselor decides to change his or her policy, or insuring company. Though there are many reasons for this, whether being offered a better premium, or being unsatisfied with the business the person is receiving at the moment.
