The Indian culture instilled a sense of honor in me, which to the present day is contributing to the personal and intellectual development of me. My intellectual development has largely been cherished through my parents, who taught me the sense of honor for myself, and the family as family image was a big deal in India. The Indian culture influenced me throughout my years in India to challenge myself and to honor my family by being classified as one of the top students at my school along with being a good human being. An Indian family was ranked according to the academic success of their children, which put a lot of pressure on me to perform the best I could so I could make my family proud. When we moved to Canada, the pressure of being the best so that my family was viewed as “Worthy” was lifted but the sense of the culture still followed me; however, it was second nature for me to adhere to that driving motivation. It was my goal to still achieve greatness in my academics, it was still my goal to try and be the best not only in the class, but in the school. However, this was a challenge because we were first in Montreal, a French-speaking city. Being from India we did not learn French, we were more focused on learning the complicated languages of English, Hindi, and Punjabi. This did not discourage me; on the contrary, it motivated me to become the best at French. Knowing the complicated path I would have to take to achieve this, I sought for help. Mme. Green was the teacher that brought out the best in me and saw the potential I had. She pushed me to my limit and ultimately I achieved what I was set out to do; I became the most fluent speaker in both English and French. After this, our family moved again, this time to the Maritimes, another French-Speaking city known as Florenceville, New Brunswick.
