The Internet should be more tightly controlled
The key question is if the content on the Internet should be censored. It is the topic of ongoing debates. And it is not an easy question to answer.
On the one hand, over the past few decades, the Internet can be accessed by anyone and anywhere and if there is some censorship, the public will lose its freedom of speech as well as its right to receive and collect the information. Furthermore, a lot of school and college projects require some extra information which is found on the Internet. In the case of censorship it might be difficult to access the data. In addition, what needs to be decided is who will do the censoring and how. Some countries have already blocked some websites and social media services like Twitter. However, in such countries people are not able to stay in touch with their friends and relatives who live in other regions or countries.
On the other hand, the media is full of stories about intruders who use some personal information (found in the social networks) in order to harm the individual. What is more, it is widely accepted that the most vulnerable users of the Internet are children who should be protected from pornography, bullying, pedophiles and websites that endanger their lives and health (for example, pro-anorexia websites). Above all, it is generally believed that the Internet is also used by terrorist and racist organizations that hurt people’s emotions and emit hate against religions and races. If the content on the Internet was controlled, it would be possible to stop the activity of such organizations.
To sum up, I should say that sometimes we feel uncomfortable because of the word «censorship». It sounds too much like our rights are denied. However, the Internet can be censored in such a way that it will remain a good source of information and a lively social space while protecting our safety.
