Çengelhan Rahmi M. Koç Museum

Çengelhan Rahmi Koç Museum not only come to realize ‘Living Museum’ concept in new museology concept of 20. century and maintain the circulation of collection and exhibition but also make the visits more actif, participative and amusing.

According to Mine Sofuoğlu’s explanations, responsable for Rahmi Koç Museum, the museum is a non-profit foundation. The collections and sources of museum are used to inform and impress the visitors, to popularize the visits and to support researchs of industrial history. Generally, it is exhibited many more than 2000 items from 19. and 20. centuries.

Çengelhan Rahmi Koç Museum is the first private industrial museum of Ankara. The Museum is in hictorical Çengelhan Caravansary located in front of the main gate of Ankara Castle known as Horse Bazaar in the past.

Sofuoğlu noted that most of the items exhibited in the museum are selected from Rahmi Koç's private collection. Other objects are either borrowed from or donated by various organizations and individuals. Original machines, scientific and mechanical items make up the basis of the museum's exhibits.

The museum has three stories, each of which hosts a different theme. The one-story rectangular building in the middle of the courtyard at the entrance is the copperware store where Vehbi Koç, the most famous businessman in Turkey, spent his childhood. He began his business life in this store; he would arrive at the store early in the morning and would sweep the floors before his father came.

As we all know, one of the main factors which make a museum unforgetable is not only quality and quantity but also the athmosphere of the museum. The mistic athmosphere of Çengelhan reflects this effect.
