This is a play of William Gibson and it is set in 1880’s at the Keller’s homestead located in Tuscumbia, Alabama. This play is about a girl called Helen. When she was a baby she suffered a kind of illness that rendered her deaf and blind. As a consequence of her inability, her family Captain Keller and her mom Kate treated her with compassion and pity her as a pet. The parents decided to hire a teacher, Mrs. Annie Sullivan, who after a hard work and dedication she not only teaches Helen to communicate with the environment around her, but also she makes huge changes in the lives of Captain Keller, Kate, and James.
Act one is when Helen loses her sight. Her mother realized that because of the illness, Helen could no longer see or hear. Fiver years later, Helen appeared playing outside the house, while her parents accompanied by Aunt Ev. were discussing Helen’s future. Helen came into the living room with a doll in her hands; she was constantly looking for the doll’s missing eyes. She made a mess inside the room and almost hurt the baby trying to find eyes for her doll; finally Helen steals two buttons from her Aunt’s Ev. dress and tries to jam them into the head of the doll. Her mother figures out that what her daughter wanted was her doll to have eyes. Then, Cap. Keller desperate decided to hire a teacher Annie Sullivan. She was a young girl in her twenties. She was blind and she had gotten nine operations in her eyes. Cap. Keller was in wondering how an inexperience young and almost blind girl would help his daughter. Once Annie arrives to the Keller’s house and met Helen, she realized that Helen was more intelligent than everyone thought. Additionally, she realized how spoiled Helen was and how disobedience she was. Annie figured this out after Helen locked her inside her room and hide the key.
