Helen Keller – The Miracle Worker

Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880 on a plantation called Ivy Green in Tuscumbia, Alabama. (the North West corner of the state)

When Helen was 19 months old (1 year and 7 months) she contracted an illness described by doctors as "an acute congestion of the stomach and the brain."(scarlet fever or meningitis) The illness left Helen blind and deaf. She was not old enough to speak yet.

Her parents contacted a school for the blind and they sent a 20 year old teacher Anne Sullivan to the family house to try to teach Helen. Ms. Sullivan tried to teach Helen the finger alphabet by spelling doll. Helen was 6 and she fought with Ms. Sullivan for a month before she understood what Ms. Sullivan was doing.

Helen first understood the signs for water when she was at the well with Ms. Sullivan.

Helen went to many schools and lived in New York and Massachusetts. When she graduated from college she became an author. She wrote 12 books including an autobiography. She also fought for the rights of people with disabilities. She traveled to more than 39 different countries.
Helen died when she was 88 yrs. Old, in her sleep on June 1, 1968. She was at home in Westport, Connecticut.
