The Most Well-Known of All Underground Railroads Conductors

Harriet Tubman is the most well-known of all the Underground Railroads conductors. During a ten year span she made 19 trips into the south and escorted over 300 slaves to freedom. She showed the virtues of courage, determination, and leadership when it came to helping people escape. And as she once proudly pointed out to Frederick Douglas in all her journey’s she never lost a single passenger.
For example in this situation she showed courage. Harriet Tubman was born a slave in Maryland’s Dorchester County around 1820. Always ready to stand up for someone else Harriet Tubman blocked a doorway to protect another field hand from an angry overseer. The overseer picked up and threw a 2 pound weight at the field hand. It fell short and struck Harriet Tubman on the head. She never fully recovered from the blow which subjected her to spells in which she would fall into a deep sleep. #“ To dream anything you want to dream, that’s the beauty of the human mind to do anything that you want to do, that is the strength of the human will, to trust yourself to your limits that is the courage to succeed”.
Harriet Tubman’s name at birth was Araminta Ross, but when she got married around 1844 to a free black named John Tubman she took his last name and her mother’s first name which was Tubman. In 1849 in fear that she along with the other slaves on the plantation was to be sold Harriet Tubman resolved to run away. She set out at night on foot with some assistance from a friendly white woman. Harriet Tubman showed determination and was on her way following the North Star by night making her way to Pennsylvania. #“ Every great dream begins with a dreamer always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to...
